Culminating at an altitude of 380 meters, the Mousson hill offers a 360-degree panorama of the Seille and Moselle valleys. A true natural lookout, it has played a strategic role in the history of Meurthe-et-Moselle since Antiquity, thanks to its dominant position.
At the summit, the remains of Bar Castle, a listed historic monument, serve as a reminder of the hill's historical significance. Built in the 1633th century by Louis de Mousson, Count of Bar, this castle gave the hill its name. It served as a means of monitoring traffic on the ancient Roman road from Lyon to Trier. Over the centuries, Mousson Hill was the scene of numerous battles, notably during the Thirty Years' War in the XNUMXth century. Besieged by French troops in XNUMX, its castle gradually collapsed, leaving only vestiges. Today, from the ruins of the ramparts and the Templar Chapel, the view of Pont-à-Mousson is breathtaking.
The Butte de Mousson is an ideal starting point for hiking in a preserved natural setting in Meurthe-et-Moselle.
