Owned by the bishops of Metz until the mid-1335th century and then by the ducal family of Lorraine, the ancient town of Nomeny was fortified until the 1365th century. Its ramparts, built between 1671 and 1742, were destroyed on the orders of Richelieu. Its Romanesque fortress (late XNUMXth century) was dismantled on the orders of Louis XIV in XNUMX, and its Gothic castle (XNUMXth century) located in its courtyard served as a quarry for the construction of Stanislas' cavalry barracks (XNUMX). Only the remains of three towers, three curtain walls, and two ditches of the fortress remain, as well as the paving stones of the castle courtyard.
