The Thiaucourt American Cemetery is located almost in the center of the Saint-Mihiel Salient, from which it is named. Most of the people buried there lost their lives during the offensive to reduce the salient in September 1918. The cemetery contains the remains of 4 men and women, whose graves are marked by a white marble headstone. As a result, the site is the third largest American World War I cemetery. The Memorial at the far end of the cemetery includes a chapel and a room displaying the map of the Saint-Mihiel Salient and the names of the 153 people whose bodies were never found. A 284-person team maintains both the cemetery and the Montsec monument. The site is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), the custodian of American cemeteries and memorials abroad, which honors the service, actions, and sacrifice of the U.S. armed forces.
