In Meurthe-et-Moselle, in Villers-la-Montagne, the A5 structure of Bois du Four is an emblematic fort of the Maginot Line.
Built in 1932, this impressive monolithic fort, with its 6000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete, has been fully restored to offer visitors an immersive experience. Visitors are immersed in the daily lives of soldiers in 1940, discovering period equipment. Among them, a firing chamber under the lower casemate equipped with two 2 mm mortars and a retractable machine gun turret, still manually operated. The kitchen and gunners' quarters recreate the living conditions in the fort. Fort A81 at Bois du Four is one of the few structures in eastern France to offer such an immersive experience.
The two-hour guided tour explores the Maginot Line in detail while highlighting the history of Meurthe-et-Moselle, rich in earthenware and steelmaking traditions.
